FilmBar Film School

October 17, 2016: Film School @ FilmBar 7:00PM- 10:00PM

“It’s not like my mother is a maniac or a raving thing. She just goes a little mad sometimes. We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven’t you?” – Norman Bates

Just in time for Halloween – Filmbar Film School Is Back!

Psycho (1960) – Alfred Hitchcock’s classic masterpiece of horror and suspense!”

Want to learn how to analyze a film? Ever wondered what the “big deal” was about “Psycho”? Just want to get into the Halloween spirit early this year? Join us for FilmBar “Film School” where ASU film professor Joe Fortunato (Yale ’89) will screen, discuss, and provide “live commentary” for Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece of suspense and the grandfather of modern horror films, Psycho – ranked number fourteen on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 greatest films of all time!

The evening will start with a brief discussion about the background and making of the film. Enjoy your favorite beverage from the bar! Then we will screen the film in FilmBar’s beautiful and comfortable screening room. Think of it as a “living room book club” for film fans! During the film, live commentary will be provided, giving you insights into the filmmaking process and some guidance on how to “read” a film creatively.

After the film, we can discuss what we’ve learned and debate if it lives up to its reputation what it says about the nature of comedy and satire!

(NOTE: While no “homework” or prior knowledge of film or this movie is required, if you’ve never seen the picture, some people might want to watch it for the first time before coming to the event without the interruptions of live commentary to “experience” the film as it was intended. That is a personal choice, of course, and not a requirement to attend!)

Price is $5.00 – pay online or at the door.
(this is a public event. RSVP does NOT guarantee a ticket, and the event WILL sell out, so I suggest getting tickets in advance at the FilmBar site below to secure your seat!)

Art and Politics in the DPRK

Friday, October 7, 2016 at 6:00PM @ DeSoto Central Market (Community Room)

What is the relationship between the art of North Korea and its policies and governing style? Why is the socialist realist art of the DPRK (inherited from the former Soviet Union) so important to the DPRK government? Although it is impossible to explore these questions in a comprehensive way in such a short talk, using a few key images in North Korean art history, Peter Sukonek (Yale MA ’11, ’13) will lead us through a brief introduction to the complex and important relationship between art and politics in the DPRK. The talk will shine some light on the question of how common North Koreans interact and respond to the ubiquitous and overwhelming nature of this art, or propaganda, that is intended to help the regime maintain ideological control over the masses. A brief Q&A will follow the talk.

About Peter:

Peter Sukonek is a marketing and branding consultant and also an expert in the art, politics, and tourism of the DPRK, about which he has consulted with CNN and other media outlets. He has degrees in art history and Asian religions from Yale, and is a partner at Tongil Tours ( tongiltours.com ), an academically-focused tour agency to North Korea and China.

handsome-dan, trimmedThe Yale Club of Phoenix is honored to organize events for Yalies in the Valley.  It’s rewarding and wonderful to serve our community in a way that allows fellow alums to remain connected with Yale.  We hope you’ll join us for an upcoming event.

As Yale is part of the Ivy League, we are also welcome at Ivy Council events.  The Ivy Council of Phoenix (30 colleges in total) is an umbrella organization that allows smaller schools like Amherst to pool resources for bigger events and larger schools like Yale to meet a broader group of alumni and to share social events.  Visit the Ivy Council website for their events schedule.
